Designer Labels — Oppression by Consent in the 21st Century

When I moved to Miami 6 years ago, I was deeply materialistic. I’m not ashamed of this, though I do have my regrets. I shudder when I think about how much I spent on luxury German vehicles over a 20 year period. That monthly amount if it had been invested instead would easily be worth millions of dollars.

The thing though is I was never living above my means. My good friend Wilfred, a fellow Brainiac and high school “Valedictorian” from back in the days, often teases me, about my…

  • Your brain must explain sensory input from the world and within your body to make them meaningful, and its primary tool for doing so is prediction.
  • Some scientists argue that a brain is essentially a prediction machine and considers prediction its fundamental and primary mode of operation.
  • is as a kind of controlled hallucination, in which the brain’s predictions are being reined in by sensory information from the world.
  • The brain strives to maintain an optimal state for the body, referred to as homeostasis, which is defined as the tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, primarily as…

In 2020 David Silver and his colleagues from the UK-based artificial intelligence lab DeepMind submitted a paper titled “Reward is not Enough” to a peer-reviewed journal. The scientists argued that intelligence and its associated abilities would primarily emerge by sticking to a simple but powerful principle: reward maximization, coupled with trial-and-error experience.

Reinforcement learning (RL) is an area of machine learning concerned with how intelligent agents should take actions in an environment to maximize the notion of cumulative reward¹.

The DeepMind scientists conclude that reinforcement learning is enough to drive behavior that exhibits most if not all abilities studied in…

Dopamine, the Thermometer and Thermostat of Value

Reward Prediction Error vs Incentive Salience Credit: Wiley

A 2017 article in Scientific American Mind by Maia Szalavitz proposes that associating pleasure with the neurotransmitter dopamine, which plays an essential role in movement and motivation, may be a misunderstanding. Instead, neuroscientist Wolfram Schultz, MD, of the University of Cambridge sees dopamine serving as a standard currency system for desire.

I don’t see dopaminergic neurons acting as a currency of desire because that implies a standard unit of measurement. However, we know the only way our feelings or that which we value is evaluated is via subjective self-report. …

There is No Objective Morality, but there are Objective Moral Principles.

The question “is there an objective morality,” is deeply flawed. It is however an easy mistake that most make.

Morality is an entire system similar to mathematics or science, and you don’t see the same question being asked of either. Yet rational agents don’t dispute that there are objective mathematical and scientific principles. To give an example, I point out that Euler’s conjecture on Graeco-Latin squares, and A. M. Legendre’s claim that 6 is not the sum of 2 rational cubes were both proven to be false. …

If I’d sold my DogeCoin yesterday morning, I’d have made a net of $18,000 in one week of trading. Instead, due to two unexpected detrimental catalysts, I lost $7000.

  1. Crypto Pioneer Silbert was seen betting against DogeCoin ahead of Elon Musk’s ‘SNL’ guest-host gig, and this caused an initial crash.
  2. In my opinion, Musk betrayed all those he’d hyped the coin to, when he described it as a hustle on live SNL, this caused an unprecedented tumble from .70 to an initial low…

The Future of Money Video

This article explores the reasoning behind why it is necessary to rethink money. It brings to light the problems surrounding traditional fiat such as hyperinflation and an over-powerful central government, by using specific countries as case studies to exemplify each issue.

We also introduce “Social currencies” such as the Brixton pound to validate how money as a community construct can solve the dilemmas posed by traditional fiat.

Centralized Government

There are typically terms of engagement governing social contract-based transactions, which include information regarding each party’s rights and responsibilities. Unfortunately, there is often a lack of…

Azure Security & Regulatory Compliance

Introduction

The goal for this article is to define at a high level what the terms regulatory compliance and IT security mean, and why they are necessary. I am a firm believer that an IT system is only as secure as the language used to describe it.

“The limits of my language are the limits of my mind. All I know is what I have words for.”
Ludwig Wittgenstein

Wittgenstein knew that concepts were important and that if we don’t say what we mean, we may never mean what we say. This article will also define and show the relationship…

Unconditional Love? Sorry. There’s no Such Thing.

“The notion of unconditional love is a logically fallacious oxymoron. The condition my dear friends is that the object of your affection is of sufficient value.”

People only care about you if you are of value to them.

I wrote a post a few days ago about the difference between being held as affectively vs objectively valuable.

Ayn Rand talks about “.. Love, friendship, respect, admiration are the emotional response of one man to the virtues of another, the spiritual payment given in exchange for the personal, selfish pleasure which one man derives from the virtues of another man’s character….”…
