I don’t see this as a function of being smart, but rather of being ethically rational. There are a lot of super smart people who are vague when it comes to negotiating the exchange of value, and prefer to keep it that way. I find those that appreciate and respond positively to a direct discussion about expectations, or even rights and obligations, typically are of honor and integrity.
