I think a fundamental chasm in neuroscience today is that despite the emergence of the constructionist paradigm of emotions, scientists still don’t make the essential distinction between non conscious affect (including motivational intensity) and the consciously constructed emotion. If we understand that an emotion = affect + cognition, where cognition = memories, past experiences, context, concepts etc. then we wouldn’t be surprised that there’s no thought, choice or action possible without emotion. Every emotion is infused with thought and every thought is infused with affect.
