It has nothing to with “happiness” because well it just doesn’t exist objectively. Happiness is not something you can scientifically or empirically identify in yourself or others because it’s a subjective and social construct. Neuroscientists now distinguish between “wanting” and “liking” an experience. It sounds like your friend values the activity hence the “wanting”, but is not sure whether it’s actually pleasurable “liking”.
